Can I feed my parakeets chicken feed rather than parrot pellets?

My partner says she'd recommend adding some fruit, like chopped up apples (be careful to remove the seeds and core, as the seeds are poisonous and the core can make them very sick), about twice a week, but otherwise, yeah, that sounds good -- certainly better than what about 80% of bird owners bother to provide. (Which is not permission to provide a less adequate diet -- just praise for being thoughtful enough to properly feed your budgies rather than just throw some seed at them like most people do.)
