Name this strange, stringed instrument?

I saw it being played by a class the other day, but I can't figure out what it's called. The instruments are made of wood, are about 18 inches long, about 12 inches wide, and about four inches tall. It looks like a tiny coffin, and has strings on top like a violin or a guitar. The musicians were playing them with a bow, and the notes sounded a lot like the violin version of a sitar.
