Winter crops for UK vegetable garden?

I'm trying to plan my vegetable garden to make the most of the limited space. I have some plots that will be left empty from September/October round to March/April. Is there anything that I could sow and harvest in that time? I would particularly like to fit some cabbages, kale, spinach and onions in. Are there any varieties that would suit this time frame?
